1. Is this a good way to use some of my stash?

It sure is! You acquired those fabrics because there was something you liked about them in the first place, so use that intuition and make a beautiful quilt. Scraps are fair game, too. Gwen urges, “Don’t throw away scraps. They are your little treasures.” Gwen seriously changes the way you regard every piece of fabric that comes your way. It could be just what you need for your next Liberated Quilt.

2. Is it hard to make quilts without using patterns?

If you have never made a quilt without pouring laboriously over a pattern, you are in for a treat. Gwen affirms that making your own quilt using her method is exciting because it keeps you engaged throughout the whole project. Less measuring, fewer rules, more possibilities. There’s just a lot to like about that. Gwen says, “When I do this at home, I get lost in the project and hours go by. It’s a very playful way of working.” Honestly, for most of us, quilting is about the pleasure it brings. Of the Liberated quiltmaking process, Gwen muses, “Also, when you sew like this, it’s OK to hum.”

3. What types of fabrics will I need for this class?

Rather than a specific fabric list, here are some tips from Gwen about what you will need. Exact amounts and colors are not given. So whether you plan to make Baskets, Log Cabins, or both, this is your quilting adventure with Gwen. Get ready to have some fun!Everything works. Choose fabric you like to work with and you will probably like your quilt.No need to reinvent the wheel. Take time to look at books with pictures of quilts you like. When you see one you like, study it carefully to discover the colors used to make it.I often toss in an accent color but not always.You can have value change (lights and darks) but you don’t have to.You don’t have to know how to use the color wheel. Your intuition is probably more likely to deliver something to write home about!Start trusting yourself! And remember, it’s not about how much your quilt looks like someone else’s—it’s about how different it looks.Think about what kind of quilt you want to make and choose fabric that will help you create it.Consider whether you want a quilt in light colors, one in darker tones, one in brights, solids, prints, reproduction fabrics, or contemporary fabrics.Choose fabrics you think will work and start with those. You can always add or take away.Don’t over think it. Select fabrics instinctively so you don’t run the risk of ending up with an uninteresting quilt that has too much coordination. Don’t spend too much time trying to match colors. It can help to have a few colors that don’t actually go with all the others.
